Bright & Early: Visual Artist Ria Unson

  • STL.org 3033 Locust Street St. Louis, MO, 63103 United States (map)

This month Bright & Early welcomes Visual Artist, Ria Unson and The Art Of Time Travel And Other Mysteries Of A Creative Life.

Ria moved to St. Louis in the late 90’s without knowing a soul other than her boyfriend at the time. After 20 years of building a life here, she accidentally discovered that her great grandfather was brought to St. Louis in 1904 to be part of the Philippine exhibit at the World’s Fair. By sheer coincidence (or was it destiny?), she happened to live on the land where her ancestor once walked—the very site of the Philippine exhibit.

Because of this 120-year old connection, Ria is fascinated with the concept of time. It has become a recurring theme in her art that shows up almost unconsciously. Can the creative process be a portal between past, present, and future? Is there something more to inspiration than a channel for a solution to the question or problem at hand?

In her talk, Ria shares the unexplainable synchronicities that continually show up in her creative practice—the right-place, right-time occurrences that have often made her wonder if she is just one character in a larger story. She invites you to ponder the implications of these magical moments on creativity, purpose, and personal agency.
